Roll & Play is a great first introduction to games for young children. It is very simple to play and there are no winners, losers, strategy, or goals. In fact, it's actually more of a fun activity than a game, but it does teach young kids some core concepts of board games. It also provides a fantastic way for parents and older siblings to interact with kids as young as 18 months.

The activities on the Roll & Play cards teach and reinforce great developmental skills for toddlers. Each color/side of the die is a different cateogry: colors, emotions, animal sounds, body parts, actions, and counting. The activities are fun and at an appropriate level for most kids in this age. It is also great to combine Roll & Play with the Move and Groove version of the game for even more active fun.

How to Play

Official Rules

The official rules are available from the manufacturer here. However, there are no real rules other than roll the dice and have fun.

Enhanced Rules

This game is extremely simple, which is great for 2 - 3 year olds. However, some kids may outgrow it even by the age of 4, so we have some suggestions in our Custom Rules section to help keep it interesting.

Fast Facts

How many players?

  • Playable with 1 or more
  • Best with 2 or more

What ages can play?

  • Playable 18 months to Adult
  • Best for ages 2 to 5

It is very rare to find a game that is focused on the 18-36 month age range, but Roll & Play has accomplished this so well. Many of the activities will also be fun for 4 - 5 year olds. Beyond that it will be too simple unless it's used as a way to engage with a younger child. The Move and Groove version of the game provides a way to extend the play into the 6 - 7 year old range as it's all about fun ways to move.

Can different skill levels or ages play together?

Yes, there is no competion to cause a disadvantage for any players.

How long does it take to play?

5 - 10 minutes for many kids this age, but others will not want to stop playing

Will we get bored after a few games or does it have good replayability?

This will be very replayable for the intended age range, especially when combined with the Move and Groove version of the game.

Setup/Cleanup

How much work is it?
Low. Take the cards out of the pouch on one side of the die and sort them into their appropriate piles.

Would kids be able to do it on their own?
Setup is simple enough even for a 3 year old. Young kids would need someone to read the cards, at least the first few times. They may recognize many of the cards from the picture after that.

Will parents have fun too...

...when playing with the kids?
Yes, when playing with kids in the intended age range.

...without the kids?
No

Educational Value

What skills will this game help develop?

Communication
All of the activities help practice communication, both verbal and non-verbal, at a level appropriate for toddlers. The emotions card category is particularly helpful here, in both expressing and understanding emotions.

Motor skills
For a toddler, basic motor skills are exercised by rolling the die and selecting cards. And any kids 5 and under will enjoy getting up and moving with the action cards.

Basic Knowledge
The counting, colors, body parts, and animal sounds categories all help solidify fundamental concepts that are key parts of development. And they do this in a fun, engaging manner.

But will my kids actually have fun playing it?

Yes, these are exactly the kind of activities kids in this age range love to do.

Custom Rules

Make the game more interesting for 4 to 6 year olds

Use two cards at once
Using two cards at once can help extend the upper end of the age range. You can select the second card by rolling the die again, picking another at random, or using a favorite category. The action category is a great one to combine with others.

Play the game to music
Turn on your favorite kid/parent friendly playlist and make it a mini dance party.

Combine with Move and Groove version
Take the above two custom rules and then combine Roll & Play with the Move and Groove version of the game for the most fun. In this case we usually roll both dice and use a card from each. This works extremely well because Move and Groove is all action based.

Do you use custom rules we haven't thought of? If you have found some other ways to customize the rules, please share them with us through our Contact page. We're always interested in new ways to improve gameplay.
